Pongal: A South Indian Breakfast

Pongal is a dish made with rice , lentils which are seasoned with spices and drenched with ghee on top of it. So, let's get cooking some Pongal folks!

Pongal is a South Indian dish which is a perfect breakfast which adds a unique flavor to your morinings and it is also a healthy meal which is easy to make and packed with protein for that gym rats out there.

Ingredients

To make this dish you need the following items adjust them according to your quantities I will mention the regular quantities you can feel free to make as many changes as you want because cooking is experimenting😉.
  • A cup of rice.
  • A quater cup of moongdal
  • Water (4 cups)
  • Turmeric powder 
  • Salt to taste
  • Ghee
  • Crushed black peppercorns
  • A spoonfull of Cumin seeds 
  • Hing to taste 
  • Curry Leaves
  • Grated ginger
  • Cashew nuts

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Rice and Lentils

  1. Rinse and Roast: Wash the rice and moong dal together with cold water. Now in a pan roast the moong dal over medium heat until you see a light golden color.
  2. Cook Rice and Lentils: Now take out your pressure handler no not your brain I meant pressure cooker which will handle the pressure of your moongdal . Now combine the roasted moong dal, rice, turmeric powder, salt, and water. Cook until the rice and lentils are soft and mushy. If using a pressure cooker, cook for about 3-4 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally.



Step 2: Temper the Spices

  1. Heat Ghee: Take a small pan put some ghee in it and let it heat over a medium flame.
  2. Add Spices: Now its time to add some flavors to your Pongal so add crushed black peppercorns, cumin seeds, asafoetida, curry leaves, and grated ginger. Let it cook for few seconds until you feel the fragrances. I can't help if you have a blocked nose😅
  3. Add Cashews: Now it's time to bring in the king of this dish the cashews just add them and let them fry until they are golden.

Step 3: Combine and Serve

  1. Mix with Rice: Now it's time to mix the experiments nothing to worry just pour these spices and ghee over the cooked rice and moongdal mixture and mix mix mix.
