Momos: The Steamed Dumplings with a Twist

Hello, Cookeazy family ! Have you ever heard of Momos. Yeah those momos that you see in the food vlogs, they are filled with veggies which are then steamed which adds a soft texture to these steamed dumplings. These Momos are a beloved dish from Himalayan region. Now-a-days these Momos are the street favorite food for every foodie. They taste delicious with the red and green chutney. Momos are the best cheat meal which are flavorful. So, without wasting any more time let's get into the making these steamed dumblings.

Momos can be filled with a variety of ingredients. You can add veggies, chicken according to your mood. Since they are steamed they are soft and easy to eat. They are a perfect snack for the evening.

Ingredients

Here are the list of ingredients that you need to make these Momos:

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • Salt to your taste
  • Water as much needed

For the Filling:

Vegetable Momos:  For veggies out there here is the list 

  • Chopped cabbage (according to your requirement)
  • Chopped carrots (according to your requirement)
  • Half cup of finely chopped bell peppers
  • Chopped onions (according to your requirement)
  • Thinly sliced garlic cloves 2-3 would be ideal
  • Thinly sliced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil 



Chicken Momos: For Chicken lovers here is the list

  • Finely cut chicken so that it can be stuffed.
  • Finely chopped onions and spring onions
  • Thinly sliced garlic cloves 2-3 would be ideal
  • Thinly sliced ginger
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil

For the Dipping Sauce:

  • Large Tomatoes according to your choice 2 would be ideal
  • Dried red chilies (adjust to taste)
  • Garlic cloves (4-5)
  • One slice of ginger
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dough

  1. Make Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Gradually add water and knead to form a soft and smooth dough. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the Filling



Vegetable Filling:

  1. Sauté Vegetables: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and ginger, and sauté until fragrant. Add the onions and sauté until translucent.
  2. Add Vegetables: Add chopped cabbage, carrots, and bell peppers. Stir-fry for a few minutes until the vegetables are tender yet crunchy.
  3. Season: Add soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper, and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Chicken Filling:

  1. Sauté Aromatics: Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add minced garlic and ginger, and sauté until fragrant. Add the onions and sauté until translucent.
  2. Cook Chicken: Add minced chicken and cook until it turns white and is fully cooked.
  3. Season: Add soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper, and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and let it cool.

Step 3: Shape the Momos

  1. Roll Dough: Divide the dough into small balls. Roll each ball into a thin circle of about 3-4 inches in diameter.
  2. Fill and Shape: Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the edges together and pleat to seal the momos. You can shape them into half-moons, round pleated dumplings, or any shape you prefer.

Step 4: Steam the Momos

  1. Prepare Steamer: Grease a steamer basket or line it with parchment paper. Arrange the momos in the steamer, ensuring they don’t touch each other.
  2. Steam: Steam the momos for 12-15 minutes, or until the dough is cooked and the momos are firm to the touch.

Step 5: Prepare the Dipping Sauce

  1. Make Sauce: Boil the tomatoes and dried red chilies until soft. Drain and blend them with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, vinegar, and salt to form a smooth sauce.

Step 6: Serve

  1. Serve Hot: Serve the steaming hot momos with the spicy dipping sauce.
