- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 can (14 ounces) pitted cherries, drained (reserve some for garnish)
- 1/4 cup cherry liqueur or syrup (optional)
- Dark chocolate shavings, for decoration
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chocolate Sponge Cake
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, sift together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed until well combined.
- Add Boiling Water: Stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth. The batter will be thin; this is normal.
- Bake: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Cool: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and cool completely on wire racks.
Step 2: Prepare the Whipped Cream
- Whip Cream: In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to overwhip.
Step 3: Assemble the Black Forest Cake
- Slice Cakes: Using a serrated knife, slice each cake horizontally into two layers.
- Layering: Place one cake layer on a serving platter. If using cherry liqueur or syrup, brush it over the cake layer.
- Add Filling: Spread a layer of whipped cream over the cake and top with a layer of cherries. Repeat with the remaining layers, finishing with a layer of whipped cream on top.
Step 4: Garnish and Chill
- Decorate: Use a vegetable peeler to create chocolate shavings from a chocolate bar. Sprinkle the chocolate shavings over the top of the cake. Garnish with reserved cherries.
- Chill: Refrigerate the cake for at least 1-2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together.
Happy Baking!
